Position Yourself for a Hire

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as we gather for this weekend’s celebration, the Word of God gives us a challenging invitation:
Position yourself for a hire.
In today’s Gospel, the landowner goes out at different hours of the day looking for workers. Some are hired early in the morning, others later, and even some at the last hour. Yet, at the end of the day, the landowner gives each one the same wage.
What is Jesus teaching us?
God is always looking for people who are ready to work in His vineyard. The question is not simply, “What will I gain?” but rather, “What am I willing to give?”
Many of us are interested in God's blessings, but we sometimes forget God's work. We want the reward, but we do not want the sacrifice; we want the harvest, but we do not want to labor.
The prophet Isaiah reminds us in the first reading: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways.” God's justice is greater than our calculations. His generosity is not measured by human standards.
St. Paul challenges us in the second reading to conduct ourselves in a way worthy of the Gospel of Christ. In other words, our Christian life must show that we belong to Christ.
Dear friends, the vineyard is the Church, the world, our families, our communities, and every place where God has placed us. Every day, God asks us: “What are you doing in my vineyard?”
Perhaps you have been standing idle because of fear. Perhaps you think it is too late. Perhaps you believe you have nothing to offer. Today's Gospel says: It is never too late to respond to God's call.
Three practical lessons
1. Position yourself for God's call.
Live in such a way that when God calls, you are ready. Prayer, Mass, confession, charity, forgiveness, and service keep us spiritually prepared.
2. Stop comparing your reward with another person's reward.
The workers who came early complained because those who came later received the same wage. Do not allow comparison to steal your joy. God knows your labor, your sacrifice, and your heart.
3. Work while there is still time.
None of us knows how much time remains. Do not postpone conversion, forgiveness, service, or reconciliation.
The invitation is today.
Dear brothers and sisters, God is still passing through the streets of our lives looking for workers. Will He find us ready?
Let us not spend our lives standing idle while the vineyard of the Lord needs our hands, our hearts, our prayers, and our witness.
And when our earthly day is finished, may the Master find us faithful and say:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Amen.
