About Saint Joseph Catholic Church
The roots of Saint Joseph Catholic Church reach back to the 1840s, when German and Irish Catholic immigrants began settling in the Roanoke area of northeastern Indiana. In those early years, missionary priests traveling between Fort Wayne and Lafayette would celebrate Mass in private homes to serve the spiritual needs of the growing Catholic community.
By the 1850s, a small frame church was built at the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Roanoke. After a fire destroyed the original building, the parish community rebuilt, and in 1867, the Diocese formally established Saint Joseph Parish when it purchased a brick church building at Sixth and Main Streets. Father William Woeste became the first resident pastor in 1870, and a parish cemetery was purchased soon after in 1873.
Over the decades, the parish continued to grow. Improvements to the church, including a choir loft and stained glass windows, were completed in the early 1900s, and a brick rectory was built in 1924, allowing the parish priest to live in Roanoke and serve both Saint Joseph and nearby Saint Catherine of Alexandria parish.
In 1969, construction began on the present church building located behind the original structure. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on Palm Sunday in 1970, and the church was consecrated later that year by Bishop Leo A. Pursley.
Today, Saint Joseph Catholic Church continues the legacy of the faithful families who first gathered for prayer on the Indiana frontier. Rooted in a tradition of faith, prayer, and service, our parish remains a welcoming community dedicated to worshiping God and sharing the Gospel in the Roanoke area.
