Learn to Live in the Spirit Rather Than in the Flesh

July 1, 2026

Today's message is simple but life-changing: Choose to live in the Spirit and not in the flesh. St. Paul reminds us that "those who live according to the flesh cannot please God," but those who are led by the Spirit become children of God.

To live in the flesh is to allow anger, pride, lust, greed, jealousy, unforgiveness, selfishness, and laziness to control our lives. These may seem harmless at first, but they slowly destroy our peace, weaken our prayer life, damage our relationships, and distance us from God. A life ruled by the flesh always ends in emptiness.

Think of someone who is constantly lazy and keeps postponing important responsibilities. Instead of using the gifts God has given, the person wastes time, neglects prayer, avoids work, and makes excuses. Little by little, opportunities are lost, dreams die, faith grows cold, and frustration takes over. What began as a small habit eventually becomes a prison. That is how the flesh destroys a person.

On the other hand, living in the Spirit transforms us from within. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength to forgive when it is difficult, to remain calm in suffering, to choose truth over lies, purity over sin, diligence over laziness, and hope over despair. A person who walks in the Spirit is not controlled by emotions or circumstances but is guided by God's wisdom and love.

The prophet reminds us that God has wonderful blessings prepared for those who trust Him, while Jesus assures us that those with humble and open hearts receive the mysteries of God's Kingdom and find true rest in Him. Only the Holy Spirit can give the peace that the world cannot offer.

Today, let each of us ask: Who is directing my life—the Holy Spirit or the desires of the flesh? Every decision we make either brings us closer to Christ or farther away from Him. If we surrender our hearts to the Holy Spirit, He will give us the grace to overcome sin, the courage to persevere, the discipline to do what is right, and the strength to finish the race of faith. Those who live in the Spirit do not merely survive—they flourish, they become a blessing to others, and they inherit the eternal life that Christ has promised.

May the Holy Spirit lead us always.

Amen.

Today’s readings call us to reflect on a beautiful but often neglected Christian duty: receiving, supporting, encouraging, and caring for the messengers of God.

The readings today invite us to remain focused on God and never allow fear to silence our faith. We live in a world where truth is often rejected, and those who stand for what is right are sometimes criticized, isolated, or misunderstood.
